Rügen Island · Baltic Sea
White villas, five kilometres of fine sandy beach and the fresh Baltic air — the largest seaside resort on the island of Rügen.
What makes Binz special
Around the turn of the century, the middle classes discovered summer retreats by the Baltic Sea — and Binz became their most beautiful stage. The white villas of the seaside-resort architecture, with their carved verandas and little towers, date from that era and shape the town to this day. Villa Concordia, built in 1901, is one of them.
In between: the fine, gently sloping sandy beach, the long beach promenade, the pier and the venerable Kurhaus. Binz is elegant without being loud — well-kept, walkable, and at any time of year filled with a special brightness that the sea carries into the town.
On your doorstep
From Lottumstraße 23 it is around 50 metres to the beach. The promenade leads in a few minutes to the pier and the Kurhaus, the town's landmark. Along the way: restaurants serving fresh fish, cafés, small shops and the town's most beautiful villas.
A swim in the sea in the morning, an afternoon stroll to the cliffs towards Prora or to Lake Schmachter See with its Park of the Senses — for most days in Binz you simply don't need a car.
Day trips
Binz lies in the middle of the island — the ideal starting point for Rügen's most famous sights.
The most visited palace in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania sits on the highest hill of eastern Rügen, in the middle of the beech forest above Binz. The cast-iron spiral staircase of the tower rewards you with a sweeping view over the island — reachable on foot, by horse-drawn carriage or with the Rasender Roland steam train.
The white chalk cliffs of Jasmund National Park with the famous Königsstuhl are among Germany's best-known natural wonders — surrounded by UNESCO World Heritage beech forests. A good half hour away by car.
Since 1895 the historic narrow-gauge steam railway has puffed across the island — from Binz past the hunting lodge to Sellin, Baabe, Göhren and Putbus. Nostalgia on a regular timetable, departing right from Binz.
At the Naturerbe-Zentrum near Prora, the walkway winds up through the treetops to a lookout tower — Baltic Sea view included. Especially lovely for families, just a few kilometres from Binz.
The "Colossus of Rügen": the kilometres-long former KdF seaside resort from the 1930s, today with a documentation centre — a striking piece of history on the longest stretch of beach in the bay.
The famous Sellin pier with its diving gondola, the Göhren cliffs, the lagoon landscape around Putbus — every stop on the Rasender Roland line is worth a day of its own.
Rügen is a paradise for four-legged friends: designated dog beaches, wide forests and dog-friendly restaurants. Pets are welcome in all five apartments of Villa Concordia.
Overnight guests receive the Binz guest card — with free bus rides within the town and numerous discounts. The visitor's tax can conveniently be paid online.
Binz has its own railway station with long-distance connections; by car, the A20 leads over the Rügen causeway onto the island. High summer for beach days, spring and autumn for peace and clear air — and even winter has its own magic, with an empty promenade and wellness days.
